You've found the perfect embroidery design, but the download comes in five different file types. Which one does your machine actually need? Here's a plain-English guide to the most common embroidery file formats and which machines read them.
The quick answer: match the format to your machine brand
- Brother / Baby Lock → PES
- Janome → JEF
- Tajima and most commercial multi-needle machines → DST
- Husqvarna Viking / Pfaff → VP3 (older Husqvarna models use HUS)
- Bernina / Melco → EXP
- Singer → XXX
Always double-check your machine's manual — some models read more than one format.
DST: the universal workhorse
DST (Tajima) is the most widely supported format and the standard for commercial embroidery shops. It stores stitch coordinates and commands but not thread colours, so colours may appear random on your screen. That's normal — just follow your colour chart.
PES: the home-embroidery favourite
PES is Brother's format and one of the most common for home machines. Unlike DST, it keeps colour information, so what you see on screen is closer to the finished stitch-out.
JEF, VP3, EXP, XXX
These are brand-specific formats. They work just like PES for their machines. If a design isn't offered in your format, a digitizer can usually convert it — but converting between formats can occasionally change small details, so test-stitch first.
What about EMB?
EMB is a Wilcom working file. It keeps the original objects (satin columns, fills, lettering) so a digitizer can resize or edit the design properly. You can't stitch it directly on most machines, but it's valuable to keep if you'll want changes later.
Tips before you stitch any file
- Check the size fits your hoop.
- Don't scale more than 10–15% on the machine — bigger changes affect density.
- Test on scrap fabric with the same stabiliser you'll use for the real piece.
- Keep the file name short and copy it to the USB root if your machine can't see it.
